Ingredients

2 medium zucchinis, thinly sliced

2 medium tomatoes, thinly sliced

1 large onion, thinly sliced

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 cup grated mozzarella cheese

1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1/2 cup heavy cream

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon dried thyme

Salt and pepper, to taste

Fresh basil leaves, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 375°F (190°C) to prepare for baking.

Sauté the vegetables: In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onion and minced garlic. Sauté until the onions are translucent and fragrant, about 5 minutes. Season the mixture with salt, pepper, oregano, and thyme. Once cooked, remove from heat.

Layer the gratin: Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish. Begin layering the ingredients: start with half of the sautéed onion and garlic mixture as the base layer. Next, arrange half of the zucchini slices evenly over the onions, followed by half of the tomato slices. Lightly season this layer with salt and pepper. Repeat the layering process with the remaining sautéed onions, zucchini, and tomatoes.

Add the cream: Gently pour the heavy cream evenly over the top layer of the assembled vegetables, ensuring it seeps through to enhance the flavors.

Cheese it up: Evenly sprinkle the grated mozzarella and Parmesan cheese over the final layer of vegetables, creating a cheesy top.

Bake the gratin: Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil to prevent excessive browning. Place it in the preheated oven and bake for 30 minutes. After this time, carefully remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and has turned a lovely golden brown.

Garnish and serve: Once out of the oven, allow the gratin to rest for a few minutes before slicing. Decorate the top with fresh basil leaves for an aromatic touch and serve warm for an irresistible side dish or main course.

                  - Presentation Tips: Serve directly from the baking dish for a rustic look, or transfer slices to individual plates. A drizzle of balsamic reduction on the plate can add a sophisticated flair.
