Ingredients

14 oz (400g) firm tofu, pressed and drained

2 tablespoons cornstarch

1 tablespoon olive oil

2 tablespoons soy sauce (use tamari for a gluten-free option)

1 tablespoon sriracha (adjust according to your spice preference)

1 tablespoon maple syrup (or substitute with agave nectar)

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon smoked paprika

½ teaspoon ground cumin

½ teaspoon ground black pepper

½ teaspoon salt

¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for additional heat)

Fresh cilantro or sliced green onions for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Begin by preheating your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper to facilitate easy cleanup and prevent sticking.

Prepare the Tofu: Take the pressed tofu and slice it into bite-sized cubes or rectangles, each about 1 inch thick. Pat the pieces dry with a clean kitchen towel to ensure they are free from excess moisture, which helps achieve the desired crispiness.

Coat the Tofu: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the cornstarch, olive oil, soy sauce, sriracha, maple syrup, garlic powder, smoked paprika, cumin, black pepper, salt, and cayenne pepper (if you're feeling adventurous) until a smooth paste forms. Carefully fold in the tofu cubes, ensuring each piece is thoroughly coated with the spicy mixture.

Bake the Tofu: Arrange the coated tofu pieces in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet, making sure they are not overcrowded; this will help them crisp uniformly. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, flipping the tofu halfway through the cooking time to promote even browning and crisping. You'll know they're ready when they are golden brown and crispy to the touch.

Serve: Once baked, take the tofu bites out of the oven and let them cool for a minute or two. If desired, top with freshly chopped cilantro or sliced green onions for a pop of color and flavor. Serve them warm, accompanied by your favorite dipping sauce; sweet chili sauce or soy sauce make delightful pairs!
