Ingredients

1 pound ground beef

1/2 pound ground pork

1 cup Italian-style breadcrumbs

1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1/4 cup freshly chopped basil (plus more for garnish)

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 large egg

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional for a kick)

1 jar (24 oz) marinara sauce

4 sub rolls, fresh

8 ounces fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced

Olive oil, for drizzling

1 teaspoon dried oregano

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Begin by preheating your oven to 400°F (200°C).

Prepare the Meatballs: In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef and pork, Italian breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan cheese, chopped basil, minced garlic, egg, salt, black pepper, and optional red pepper flakes. Use your hands or a spatula to mix the ingredients until just combined; avoid overmixing to keep the meatballs tender. Form the mixture into golf ball-sized meatballs (you should have around 16-18 meatballs).

Brown the Meatballs: Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add a drizzle of olive oil. In batches, carefully place the meatballs in the skillet, browning them on all sides for about 5-7 minutes until they achieve a golden brown color. Note: they do not need to be fully cooked at this stage; they will finish cooking in the marinara sauce.

Simmer in Marinara Sauce: Once the meatballs are browned, transfer them to a large pot. Pour the marinara sauce over the meatballs, ensuring they're well-coated, and sprinkle with dried oregano. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer and let it cook for 20-25 minutes, or until the meatballs are cooked through and tender.

Prepare the Sub Rolls: While the meatballs simmer, segment the sub rolls by opening them slightly on a baking sheet. Layer the inside of each roll generously with slices of fresh mozzarella cheese.

Assemble the Subs: Once the meatballs are cooked, carefully add 3-4 meatballs into each sub roll, making sure to spoon extra marinara sauce over them. Top each sub with additional mozzarella slices for a creamy finish.

Melt the Cheese: Place the assembled subs in the preheated oven and bake for 5-7 minutes, or until the mozzarella cheese is melted and bubbling beautifully.

Serve: Remove the subs from the oven and garnish with extra chopped basil. Serve warm with a side of marinara sauce for dipping, if desired.

                    - Presentation Tips: Serve the subs on a rustic wooden board, drizzled with a bit of olive oil, and sprinkle some extra basil around for color. Consider adding a small bowl of marinara alongside each serving for dipper fun!
